Porbandar Tourist Places

Porbandar is a small port town that is connected with India's history through its association with Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar in Gujarat is famous for being the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. The home of Gandhiji's childhood, known by the name of Kirti Mandir is one major attraction of the place. Kasturba Gandhi, Gandhiji's wife, was also born in Porbandar. A chronological history on the life of the Mahatma is listed in the museum at Kirti Mandir. Today, Porbandar is also an industrial town with cement and chemical units. Besides, it has a fine beach and beautiful villas on the seacoast. Rokhadia Hanuman temple in 1958Located in the extreme west of India, Porbandar is an important all-weather port on the Arabian sea. It supports a population (c.2001 CE) of over 150,000. Given its association with Mahatma Gandhi, Porbandar is today something of a tourist centre and is served by an airport and train line. Its deep sea port was built during the last quarter of the 20th century.

Birth Places of Mahatma Gandhiji
Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi is situated at the end of Saurashtra (Gujarat State) and is a picturesque seaport on the Arabian Sea. To commemorate the birth of Gandhiji a 79 ft high imposing building has been built in the lane where Bapu (as Gandhiji is known) was born in 1869. The prime attraction is the Kirti Mandir. It is a three storeyed ancestral house of Gandhiji where in the exact place where Putlibai, Gandhiji’s mother, had given birth to Gandhi, is marked with a ‘swastik’. A narrow wooden staircase leads the visitor to the upper storey, in particular Gandhiji’s reading room.

Behind Kirti Mandir is Navi Khadi, where Kasturba, Gandhiji’s wife was born. The new building adjoining Kirti Mandir, houses a Gandhian Library, a prayer hall, a nursery and a steeple decorated with episodes from Gandhiji’s life.

Chowpatty
Porbandar’s coastal line is just half a kilometre away from the city. Popularly known as Chowpatty, it is one of the main attractions for the local population as well as tourists, to visit and enjoy the beautiful scenery throughout the year. Chowpaty is a white sand beach of Porbandar. The magnificent view of the sea, with an exotic ambiance, brings in a lot many tourists and residents to the beach. Chowpaty is the famous beach of Porbandar. It is located at a kilometer’s distance, from the city. This beautiful beach has various hotels resorts and villas lined up along the water front. The rooms here provide a splendid view of the seafront along with a number of facilities. The famous Huzoor Mahal is also located along the beach. Chowpaty, the prominent attraction of the Porbandar city, is of great interest to both locals and tourists. During the evening hours, a large number of people flock here with friends and family for a stroll. The Chowpaty at Porbandar is well connected with the city by local buses and cars. The tourists can choose from the local conveyance or drive to this popular attraction of Porbandar.

Pictures, sculptures and symbols and portraying Indian culture and religion have been exhibited in this place. It is the mirror of Indian tradition.

Sudama Mandir
Extremely poor but self-respected Sudama and Krishna’s friendship brings tears of joy, when remembered. It is in memory of this Sudama that a temple has been built in the heart of the city, known as Sudama Mandir. The Sudama Mandir in Porbandar holds a lot of historic and religious importance. The temple was constructed in reverence to Sudama the childhood friend and devotee of Lord Krishna. A large number of devotees, especially the newly wed Rajasthani Ksahtriya couples, flock to the place every year.

The Sudama Mandir is a beautiful shrine dedicated to Sudama, the best friend and devotee of Lord Krishna. The temple, located in the center of the Porbandar city, is said to be the only temple in India dedicated to this ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. The Sudama Mandir at Porbandar, constructed between 1902 and 1907, holds a great historic and religious significance. It is said that due to the depletion of funds during the time of its construction, the devotees collected money by organizing drama shows. The temple has a plaque that depicts this entire phase of depletion and collection of fund for the temple. According to the Vikram Samvat, the Hindu calendar, a monument in memory of Shri Ram Devji Jethwa, who was ruler of the Jethwa Dynasty, has been created within the temple. It is said that he was severely wounded in a devious attack at that time. The temple has a maze within its complex. According to common belief among the devotees, if a person crosses this maze all his sins are forgiven. The Kshatriya couples of Rajasthan, visit the temple to seek blessings for a happy and prosperous life after there wedding.

Huzoor Palace
The Huzoor Palace of Porbandar located along the Arabian Sea is a major tourist destination. This sprawling structure, resembling a European mansion experiences a great influx of visitors all over the year. The Huzoor Palace at Porbandar was built by Natwar Shah. This sprawling structure resembling a European mansion is located at the end of the beach. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and water fountains, the palace faces the Arabian Sea. The neo- classical pillars and the porticoes with a semi circular design, the terraces with beautiful rails and the slopping timber roof add to the grandeur of the building.

The porticoes and pillars, of this magnificent palace built in the European style, mark the entrance of the palace from different sides. The large windows and wings of the palace, interconnected with the front and back yard, give a panoramic view of the sea.

The architecture, beauty, and the picturesque view of the sea attract a large number of tourists to the Huzoor Palace. Being located on the sea side it is visited by both residents and visitors of Porbandar.
